Our Commitment to Care

At Illawarra Urgent Response, care is more than the first aid we provide. It is the way we speak to people, the way we listen, the way we protect their dignity and the way we support them during moments when they may be frightened, injured, unwell or vulnerable.

As an Advanced First Aid provider, we understand both the capabilities and the boundaries of our role. We are not an ambulance service, hospital or substitute for emergency medical care. Our responsibility is to provide high-quality first aid within our training, qualifications, clinical procedures and authorised scope of practice, and to recognise when someone requires a higher level of care.

Care Within Our Scope

We promise to work within our scope of practice.

Our personnel are trained to assess and manage a range of injuries and illnesses within an Advanced First Aid environment, using the equipment, procedures and clinical skills appropriate to their qualifications and role.

We will never pretend to be something we are not.

When a person's condition requires care beyond our capabilities, our responsibility is not to exceed our scope—it is to recognise the need for escalation, request the appropriate emergency or healthcare service and continue providing appropriate first aid until care can be transferred.

Knowing when to escalate is just as important as knowing how to provide care.

The Person Behind the Patient

When someone comes into our care, we don't simply see an injury, illness or incident.

We see a person.

A person who may be frightened.
A person who may be in pain.
A person who deserves to be heard.
A person who deserves dignity.

Whenever circumstances allow, we will explain what we are doing, seek consent, listen to concerns and involve the person in decisions about their care.

We will respect privacy and confidentiality and recognise that receiving first aid—particularly in a busy public environment—can leave someone feeling vulnerable.

Care Without Judgement

Care should never depend on who you are.

We are committed to providing respectful and compassionate first aid regardless of a person's age, disability, culture, religion, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic circumstances or background.

Safety Before Convenience

There may be occasions when stopping an activity, recommending further medical assessment or requesting an emergency service creates inconvenience for an event or individual.

Where someone's health or safety is concerned, convenience will never determine our clinical decisions.

Our personnel are expected to act in accordance with their training, observations, clinical procedures and professional judgement.

Always Learning

Providing quality first aid requires more than completing a qualification.

We are committed to maintaining our skills, reviewing our practices, learning from incidents and continually improving the way we provide care.

We recognise our limitations, welcome appropriate feedback and believe that every experience provides an opportunity to become better at what we do.
